Posted by Natasha Wittmaack, Marketing Content Specialist on 16th Dec 2024
Groomers around the world inspire us. Their passion for pets and business consistently sets the bar for the industry, which is why we'll be featuring stories from VIGs - very important groomers - like you. This month's spotlight features Chloe Vonk of Sioux Center, IA.
GC: Tell us your grooming story.
CV: My grooming journey began in high school when a local groomer introduced me to the field. She showed me how rewarding dog grooming could be and taught me the skills, which I picked up quickly. I decided to pursue a two-year business degree at Dordt University to prepare to run my grooming business. With the help of my family, we built my grooming shed, and this December will mark two years since I officially opened Bark Bath Grooming!
GC: What interested you about becoming a dog groomer?
CV: I was drawn to dog grooming because of my love for animals and desire to make a difference in the community. Owning my own business has allowed me to develop my grooming skills, bring my ideas to life, and create a unique experience for pets and their owners.
GC: Do you have a favorite breed to groom? If so, why are they your favorite?
CV: My favorite breeds to groom are Australian Shepherds and Cavapoos. I grew up with an Australian Shepherd and now have two of my own, so I have a special bond with their loyal, lively personalities—they were some of the first dogs I ever groomed. I also love grooming Cavapoos for their calm, affectionate nature; they tend to enjoy the grooming process, which makes it a pleasure for both of us!
GC: What is your favorite thing about being a groomer?
CV: My favorite part of being a groomer is helping keep each dog’s skin and coat healthy. I love seeing customers react when they see their freshly groomed pet. I also enjoy educating pet parents about their dog’s specific needs and coat care.
GC: What is the best piece of grooming advice you've received?
CV: You have to be transparent with your customers, and that will help build customer relationships and trust.
GC: What would you say to someone interested in becoming a groomer?
CV: Dog grooming can be challenging, but the hard work is so rewarding when customers appreciate the care you put into their pet’s grooming. It’s especially fulfilling to build strong relationships not only with the dogs but also with their owners.

GC: What are the sacrifices and awards with owning a grooming business?
CV: Owning a dog grooming business comes with sacrifices, like working long or late hours to accommodate my customers’ schedules. But the reward is the chance to shape my business my way, putting my spin on things and building a reputation through the quality of my work.
