VIG Spotlight: Suzanne Lind

VIG Spotlight: Suzanne Lind

Groomers around the world inspire us. Their passion for pets and business consistently sets the bar for the industry, which is why we'll be featuring stories from VIGs - very important groomers - like you. This month's spotlight features Suzanne Lind of Spokane, WA.

GC: Tell us your grooming story.

SL: Growing up in rural Eastern Washington, I had no idea that grooming even existed! I was working as a waitress when a couple who were regulars at the restaurant started telling me about their work as dog groomers. I had always dreamed of working with animals, so when I discovered this was a career, I began looking for a way in. Within six months, I worked as a bather for Grrs-N-Purrs and came home exhausted but happy every day. They taught me the basics, and eventually, I got a job at a place called The Yuppy Puppy, where I was taught how to do full haircuts. My education wasn't exactly linear, so I took every opportunity to learn more through Barkleigh events, grooming expos, and videos I found online. I still go to every class I can and look forward to our local expos and dog shows, where I can study different breeds, learn new techniques, and study the science behind why we do what we do as dog groomers.

GC: What interested you about becoming a dog groomer?

SL: I have always loved animals and I am an artist at heart. Dog grooming is a blend of my two passions. Each dog is a new chance to bring out the look their owner likes while working with such wonderful creatures. It isn't easy work and not for everyone, but it has become a passion of mine.

GC: Do you have a favorite breed to groom? If so, why are they your favorite?

SL: I am a bit biased, as I do own a mini poodle, and I absolutely adore the poodle’s temperament and personality. They're incredibly sweet and cuddly while also being sassy and full of spunk. I also love Pomeranians for the same reason and hope to one day own a Pom as well.

GC: What is your favorite thing about being a groomer?

SL: I work one-on-one, and I love being able to take the time and make that connection with the dog. Each dog reacts differently to the grooming process and it's great being able to help them relax and enjoy it rather than it being a stressful situation. There will always be something each dog doesn't like about the grooming process (usually the bath and getting wet) and it's truly a treat and honor to get them to relax and trust that I won't hurt them in any way.

GC: What is the best piece of grooming advice you've received?

SL: A good bath and dry is the best way to get a good haircut. I will always be incredibly grateful to my first salon for setting me up for success by making sure I knew how to get a dog truly clean.

GC: What would you say to someone interested in becoming a groomer?

SL: Learn dog language. It sounds silly but learn the subtle signs and indicators that dogs use to communicate. It is the most valuable tool in my repertoire, and it keeps dogs coming back to me outside of the grooming salon as well as inside. They see I'm paying attention and love feeling understood.

GC: Tell us more about Adelaide Aristopups.

SL: Adelaide's Aristopups started as a way for me to be able to do what I'm passionate about without having to conform to the way others want to run their business. I take longer with dogs than a lot of places like and will use more product than others if I feel like a dog isn't clean enough. I also work with dogs who have health conditions like seizures or heart murmurs, which many places won't want to do simply because of the risks. Thanks to my education and continued studies, I have learned a lot of warning signs and always stop if it becomes remotely unsafe for the dog. I also take photos of every dog for that added ‘aristocratic touch’ and share with the owners so they can enjoy the experience as well. The name of my business is also a play on the movie Aristocats, with Adelaide being the name of the Duchess who cares so much for her pets.

GC: What are the sacrifices and awards with owning a grooming business.

SL: The sacrifices are a lot less personal time, while the rewards are also a lot more personal time, contradictory as that may seem. Being the owner means I'm never truly done working, but it also means I can schedule in my breaks when I need or want to. Sometimes I forget and end up working 7 days straight, but as soon as I notice, I can give myself 5 days off to compensate. It also means I can try out new products if I want, or order exactly what I like.

GC: Why do you choose to shop with Groomer's Choice?

SL: It took me several years to figure out my skin sensitivities, but once I found Groomer's Choice and their Green Groom line, I haven't looked back. I am sensitive to both scents and sulfates, so finding a natural-based soap with gentle scents that actually works well has made a world of difference. The conditioner is moisturizing while still rinsing out quickly, and the shampoo cleans well and leaves a gentle scent. I have also worked with other brands that can damage a dog's skin if not diluted properly, so I love that I can use their products without worrying about that. On top of all that, they're a US brand with many products made in-house, and have wonderful shipping times and cost. Overall, I've never had a problem with Groomer's Choice and order as much as I can through them!

GC: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

SL: Thank you Groomer's Choice for continuing to develop your brand and offered products! It is great seeing your booth at trade shows! I love the new Pistachio Dream shampoo from Crown Coat and look forward to seeing what else you come out with!
