Satisfaction: How to Keep Clients Coming Back

“I can’t get no satisfaction… ’cause I try and I try.” —The Rolling Stones
Your customers should never be singing this about your business. One disappointing visit can send them down the street—and that’s not a $60–$100 loss; it’s $4,000–$5,000 over the life of the dog.
The Real Secret: Communication
Most service failures aren’t about skill—they’re about poor communication. Hearing is passive; active listening is intentional. It means interpreting what the client says, confirming expectations, and responding clearly.
Three Simple Ways to Build Satisfaction
1) Ask Questions (Every Time)
- Clarify style requests: instead of “puppy cut,” ask how much hair they want left.
- Set a pickup time together—don’t leave it open-ended.
- Proactively offer add-ons (pick 1–2 you’ll ask about with every client).
- Rebook at checkout to lock in their return.
2) Don’t Assume—Agree
- Describe exactly what you will do and what they should expect to see.
- Present options and let the client choose from what you can do.
- Remember: you see dozens of pets daily; they see one—their own.
3) No Surprises. Ever.
- Running late? Call immediately.
- Price change for tangles, special handling, fleas? Call immediately.
- Health issue or injury? Call immediately.
Clear, early communication turns conflict into partnership.
Master active listening, set expectations up front, and eliminate surprises. Do that—and your clients won’t just be satisfied; they’ll recommend you.
